Luna

Luna is a moon walking simulator. It features the actual terrain of the moon! Press play, wait for a minute to load.

How to play: Use WASD or arrows to walk, space to jump (or fly), and drag the cursor to rotate the camera.

Notes on development:

  • Based off of height-maps published by NASA, generated a realistic model of the moon.

  • Solved complex geometry problems to convert 2D heightmap to 3D meshes, generated the terrain as an actual sphere.

  • Built complex multi-threaded terrain management system which generates / releases chunks of terrain as the player walks around.

  • Built custom AI Pathfinder that can find its way even if some of the terrain is not loaded, and takes both static and dynamic objects on top of the terrain into consideration.

Terrain Management

Dynamically removes and loads new chunks of the terrain, off the main thread and with 0 memory footprint.

Agents Pathfinder

Using A* with a proprietary solution for representing graph weights, calculates optimal paths for agents to avoid obstacles, craters and other agents, even if some of the terrain in its path is missing.

The blue and green vectors represent the slope's direction and intensity for every traversed node in the graph (which is a small square of terrain). The red line represents the selected optimal path.
